Big Pow-Wow held by Sun City West Foundation
over Ice Cream Sundaes in the Webb Room of the Foundation building May
8. The Boards of Directors of Recreation Center, PORA, PRIDES, Posse,
Interfaith Community Care and Sun Health Thrift Shop huddled around
tables to create sundaes with a multitude of toppings and the proverbial
cherry topping their culinary efforts.
The group of 31 were welcomed and introduced by Foundation President
George Powell. Following
the introduction each board’s president was called on to give a five
minutes discourse about their organization, plus time for questions and
answers.
Sun City West Foundation President George Powell led off by telling of
the Foundation’s plans to set up a Volunteer Center to function as a
volunteer agency that would bring together volunteers and organizations.
The Foundation is looking into transit issues with hopes of providing
additional transportation for residents who have temporary
transportation needs or no longer care to drive.
President Matt Szydlowski
stated that Sun City West
Recreation Center’s five year plan focus will be to serve the interest
of the 3,000
“Baby Boomers” already residing in SCW as well as future
residents. The first step is under way-- installing a new fitness center
at Beardsley Recreation Center.
Rec Center General Manager Mike Whiting elaborated on the
negotiations of water rights for the community that will result in huge
savings as well as protect the future water rights of Sun City West.
Sandy Goldstein, Board Trustee of Sun Cities Area Historical Society,
invited the assembled group to take a tour of the first house built in
Sun City and learn the fifty year history of the Sun Cities.
Computer users are able to take a virtual tour by going to
www.scazhistory.org.
Sun Health Auxiliary Board Member Sharon Wallace said the Auxiliary has
4,000 members many of whom volunteer at Sun Health Thrift Shop located
in SCW Foundation’s building. Ms. Wallace expressed Sun Health’s
Auxiliary appreciation to the Foundation and concluded by inviting all
to drop by the Thrift Shop.
The nineteen members of Community Fund work diligently out of their
homes to reach Sun City West residents whose lives may have need of some
financial assistance declared President Avis Metz.
There hotline telephone number for a confidential interview is
623-546-1122.
Interfaith Community Care Board Chairman Ed Cirillo revealed that ICC
served 13,000 people last year.
The new building should be open by the end of October and will
accommodate young children to seniors and also house a library.
A concern is to better coordinate transportation to Adult Day
Care Centers. One of the many Adult Day Care Centers is located in the
Foundation building.
Posse Commander Jan Vejraska described the
“R.U.O.K.” program -- a computer-generated telephone call system to
residents checking on their daily welfare of residents. The SCW Posse is
now able to offer finger printing to the public by appointment.
This is made possible due to a generous donation from former
Posse member Bert Thomas and his wife Jane.
PRIDES enthusiastic Peggy Joynson described the 17 sections areas of
landscaping the volunteer PRIDES manicure in SCW.
The group hopes to get the Luminaria candle light vigil back to
where it once was—all the streets lined with lighted candles on
Christmas Eve—the community became magic! Also when shopping at Safeway
a resident should fill out a card and Safeway will give a percentage of
your purchase to PRIDES.
PORA President Larry Woods introduced PORA’S first Executive Director
Mary Fullerton. For those
interested in recycling PORA has arranged for bins behind Safeway for
residents to deposit plastic, glass and newspapers. PORA’S email
newsletter now reaches 6,200 homes.
Attendees were pleased to be able to interact with other community
leaders “Working Together” to maintain the our quality of life within
Sun City West.
